Download: VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player the media player conquers them all. It just does so much yet its so simple. But i think it all culminates in the fact that VLC plays everything. Every format from Divx to ogg to wmv to avi, you name the type it, plays it. Personally i am fed up with windows media player 11, and quicktime only plays so much. So VLC is for me, no worries and no problems.

Brainworkout: The Missing Dollar Problem

Today's Mind Blowing Problem of the week, where did the other dollar go?

Three students checked into a hotel and paid the clerk $30 for a room ($10 each). When the hotel manager returned, he noticed that the clerk had incorrectly charged $30 instead of $25 for the room. The manager told the clerk to return $5 to the students. The clerk, knowing that the students would not be able to divide $5 evenly, decided to keep $2 and to give them only $3.

The students were very happy because they paid only $27 for the room ($9 each). However, if they paid $27 and the clerk kept $2, that adds up to $29. What happened to the other Dollar?

Since the answer is so incredibly long, rather than post it in the comments section, click this [link] to unveil the mystery behind this problem.

Never Study Again: Holistic Learning

As promised, i have compiled a list of great articles on the new approach to learning called holistic learning.

First let me give you a brief description of what holistic learning exactly is.

When most people want to learn a new subject, lets say US history, they tend to categorize all the information given them in mental boxes. Everything is relegated to certain spot in their head.

Holistic learning on the other hand, fully engages all parts of the mind, body, emotions/feelings.
Have you noticed that you tend to remember events far more vividly when frightened or happy? Well your emotions are some extremely powerful chemicals, more neuron connections are being stimulated causing memories to stick in your mind. Holistic learning not only incorporates the power of feeling but much more.

Holistic learning builds a web of knowledge. Much like how our brain consists of a web of firing neurons, holistic learning does likewise. Every fact you learn must relate to something else.

To incorporate holistic learning in your daily life ask questions so as to build relationships between your studies. Heres some basic tips to stimulate your holistic thinking.

- ask yourself, how does this relate to something i already know?

- create a metaphor : your learning about the spread of communism in major countries (Russia, China, Vietnam, etc.) and you know you will soon forget this lecture. But being the computer savvy person that you are, you relate the spread communism to your already comprehensive knowledge of computer viruses. You think, "much like how communism spread through countries, viruses spread from computer to computer." this is a very basic example of creating of metaphor to help you get the point.

- draw mind maps: a mind map is basically creating a web of notes. Rather than the conventional types of notes where everything is in its own section, mind mapping connects every idea to each other. Lets say your taking notes on the reasons for the cold war. First create a big bubble with cold war labeled in it. Next create branches, one says reasons for cold war, then off that branch list reasons, for it. Therefore every note is interconnected. If you cant recall a fact, then follow it up the mind map tree. Mind mapping is a far more effective way to take notes, and for you computer note takers our there, there are many mind mappers for you.

bubbl.us

mindjet

- for mac osx users

- ask your self to summarize what you just read: you may end up reading for a longer period of time, but you'll never have to refer back to your reading, saving time in the end. What you do is, after every paragraph or section of textbook, essay, etc. stop and ask your self, what did i just read about and repeat over in your head what seemed important in that section.

- draw pictures: as it says draw a picture of what your learning, often visualizing something helps you remember it in the future.

these are just a few tips, to attain a comprehensive knowledge of the subject refer to the links at the bottom of the page.

Remember though, trying to completely change your learning habits in a just a few day is pretty much impossible, to get the most out of holistic learning it's necessary to dedicate yourself to it, with time and patience, you'll start noticing results.

Making an Effective Business Card

Whether you want to create a huge business or just a single person business, a business card is a top priority. Business cards represent you, people look at your business to card to get an idea of what your selling them, whether it be your services or products.

A business card is like a little work of art that represents all that your company stands for. A business card that's made with many wavy lines, circles, bright colors, and gives off the disorganized feel would never work for a bank yet that same card would work if you were selling your services as a graphic designer.

This is why after a company logo is created, the business card is the next most important task Since i have created many business cards myself, i know business card making is anything but easy, in fact trying to represent your business on a 2.5'' by 3'' inch card takes real brainstorming. Remember people will judge your business by your business card.

To effectively create a business card i'm providing you with some links that will tell you what you need to include, some examples to inspire your own business card and how to create and effective card. Just follow the links. Have fun

Pare your Todo list with the Essentials

Is your day filled with seemingly endless task? Its about time you get grask on what counts. This article from the good people over at lifehack.org will guide you through how to only focus on the most important of tasks. Free up your time.
I found the tips below particularly noteworthy

Most bang for your buck. Look at your to-do list: which tasks on there really, really matter? Which ones will make you the most money, get you the most recognition, and pay off for you the most in the long run? Put a star next to those tasks. If you don’t have any of those tasks on your list, consider coming up with a few. These are what you should focus on.

Choose three things. If your list has 20 things on it, just choose three for today. But you want to do five or seven? Be ruthless. Prioritize, and only choose three. Write those three on a separate piece of paper, and that’s your to-do list for today. Be sure that at least one of them leads to your short-term goal for this week. The other two should definitely be starred tasks — those really, really important ones.

Single-task. When you’re going to focus on one of your three important tasks for today, really focus. Eliminate all distractions, including the Internet and email and phones and clutter on your desk. Don’t allow anything to interrupt. Same thing if you’re going to have a one-on-one meeting with someone (as mentioned above) or batch process your smaller tasks — do one at a time. Multi-tasking will just stress you out and make you less productive. Multi-tasking is really only effective on a larger scale — doing multiple projects over the course of a month, say, instead of multiple tasks at once.

Set one time for email. This is probably the hardest task for most of us. Email is something we’re used to doing throughout the day. But really, for most people, email doesn’t need to be answered right away. Manage the expectations of those you communicate with — let them know that you only do email once a day, and they won’t expect an immediate answer. If this is impossible for you, at the very least, limit your email to chunks, instead of doing it throughout the day. Do it 2 or 3 times a day, or once an hour for 5 minutes, but not throughout the hour. And do not do it during your quiet time in the morning — that’s for starred tasks only.

Quotable Person of the Week

Today my featured Quotable person of the week is no other than Thomas Jefferson. Enjoy

I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.

Never fear the want of business. A man who qualifies himself well for his calling, never fails of employment.

Determine never to be idle...It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

Never spend your money before you have it.

It is neither wealth nor splendor, but tranquility and occupation which give happiness.

Be polite to all, but intimate with few.

When angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.

Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error.

Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.

The Psychology of Relationships

straight from PsyBlog i bring you the psychology behind relationships. the article sheds light on how important relationships may be on our health

"Some even suggest maintaining and fuelling good relationships might be as vital for our health as good nutrition and regular exercise (Ryff et al., 2001)."

Psyblog takes a look at the psychology behind relationships in this series of 8 different links.

1. Why Health Benefits of Good Relationships Rival Exercise and Nutrition
"For many of us in modern Western societies, our basic physiological needs are fulfilled and it is on higher goals that our mental and physical health depends."

2. Personality Secrets in Your Mp3 Player
"What is it about music that's so useful when we first meet someone and what kind of information can we extract from the music another person likes?"

3. Getting Closer: The Art of Self-Disclosure
"When someone you've just met starts pouring out their heart, it can make you want to run away."

4. Your Partner Has Been Unfaithful. The Question is Why.
"The type of attributions I make about my partner's behaviour will have an important affect on whether I can get over what they've done, or not. It will also affect whether I can save the relationship - if I want to that is."

5. How 'Naive Cynicism' May Poison Your Relationships
"Cynicism has its uses, but can it go too far? A study by Kruger and Gilovich (1999) suggests it can."

6. Affectionate Writing Can Reduce Cholesterol
"According to new research, writing down affectionate thoughts about close friends and family can reduce your cholesteral levels."

7. Seven Signs of Relationship (Dis)Satisfaction
"Once a relationship has become long-term, although we still talk about love and commitment, in some ways it's satisfaction that comes to the forefront. Indeed, low satisfaction is an important predictor of relationship breakdown. So, what factors have psychologists found are important in how satisfied we are with our relationships?"

8. Parental Relationships After Divorce: From 'Perfect Pals' to 'Fiery Foes'
"Although divorce/relationship breakdown happens at a number of levels - psychological, legal, economic - it is children that are usually the first concern. Who will take custody? How will the parents manage their relationship after they have separated?"

Top 5 Productivity Tips

As i constantly add new feeds to my google reader, i sometimes come across some outstanding blogs. Todays blog is http://www.lifeoptimizer.org/

Here we're provided with 5 productivity tips. Though you probably have heard of these before, not many actually utilize them. I for am one am one of those people. But once you get down to the details, some of these are really important, that is if you want to be productive.

back to his blog, here are his five tips.

  1. Rise early
Why do you need to rise early? This is the reason: early-risers have more productive mornings, get more done, and report less stress on average than “late-risers.” Many people find early morning as very productive time to do their tasks. You will be able to accomplish more in the same amount of time.
Here are some tips on becoming an early riser:
How to Become an Early Riser
Productivity Boost: How to start your day at 5:00 AM
How I Became an Early Riser
  2. Start with the most important task
After doing your morning routine like exercising or having breakfast, you should start your day by tackling your most important task for that day. Remember that it is the most important, not the most urgent task. Some people choose to start their day with things that seem urgent but actually not important. Be careful. Read Habit 3: Put First Things First of the classic book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for more information about the difference between important and urgent.
Here are some more tips about tackling the most important task:
    Control your workday
Purpose Your Day: Most Important Task (MIT)
  3. Do not multitask
There is an illusion that we will accomplish more if we multitask. But study shows that it is wrong. Be sure that you do only one task at a time. Doing only one task at a time allows you to have the necessary focus to accomplish the task with the highest possible standard.
Read “Use single handling” section in this article for more information.
  4. Prevent interruption
Preventing interruption is important to help you enter a state of deep focus and concentration, which is called the flow. Find what may interrupt you, such as the cell phone, people around you, or the Internet. Then take necessary steps to eliminate any possible interruption as much as possible (turning off the cell phone, telling people around you not to interrupt you, and so on).
Read more about preventing interruption in 7 Rules for Maximizing Your Creative Output.
  5. Actually do what you need to do
The key to productivity is actually do what you need to do. I wrote about it in my post What is the Key to Productivity?. For example, if you are a writer, you need to actually do the writing. Be careful not to get trapped by secondary activities. The most ironic thing is spending your time to maintain your productivity system instead of actually do what you need to do.
One trick I like to get myself actually do is the 50 minutes rule.

Overclock your Brain

Alright, here it is, an extensive list entailing 33 ways to "overclock" your brain from

i recently discovered his site, nonetheless it will have a permanent spot on my feeder. His post contains some overclocking tips that are common knowledge but there are quite a few hidden gems he touches on.

5. Think and learn holistically.
Holistic thinking might be the single most “advanced” learning technique. It means relating everything you learn to things you already know. This creates an interrelated web of information. Trying to memorize everything and if your memory fails you, that information is unreachable. But by interlinking your web of knowledge, if one route becomes blocked another is accessible.

19. High-tech brain power.
What’s an eight-letter word for brain booster? The answer could be Nintendo. Experts say playing one of the new games specially designed to improve your focus could have the indirect effect of getting your memory in shape. A host of new studies suggest that video games build rather than diminish cognitive skills. Even a relatively simple tiling puzzle like Tetris has been shown to boost brainpower. Whenever you solve puzzles or do brainteasers, you’re making the connections between your neurons work more efficiently, which is like putting money in the bank.

Hollistic learning as posted in the quote above deserves individual attention. When i want to learn material or certain subject, i now relate everything to something ive already previously learned, the concept behind holistic learning. Since he didn't extensively explain holistic learning, im compiling links that describe it in depth and how to apply it to your studies. Really, Holistic learning will change your life, it will take a long time to incorporate it into your routine but the rewards are endless.

Follow the link for continued article.

Mood Boosting

BOOST YOUR MOOD, Are you feeling down? Well then move! Studies have shown that engaging in physical activities is just as effective as any other treatment for mild depression. So finish reading this and go take a walk or play a sport.

2. It appears to stimulate the vagus nerve, improving function of the brain's emotion-sensing network as well as of the heart. The vagus nerve is increasingly recognized as an important pathway of depression.

3. By acting on neurohormones that govern the stress response, exercise seems to improve the ability of the body to tolerate stress and to meet changing demands. A dysregulated stress response, perhaps stemming from early psychological trauma, is implicated as a cause of depression.

Finding your Passion

When i first decided to create this blog a few weeks ago, i thought everything would be nice and simple. You just sign on post what your thinking and then wait for people to comment you up.

Was i wrong or what. I know that it's only day one of "Into the Mind" and start it up is troublesome. There's so much to do but for me it's still rewarding.

My goal is to provide a website to help every single one of you to be more productive, and to ultimately do what you want to do.

Since this blog is dedicated to growing (not physically of course), i have some relevant links about finding your passion.

Project Find Music

This site uses Google's unique search engine to find almost any song your looking for for free. The legality of it is debatable.

It's a very useful search engine but it can be really tough to locate what your looking for, it'll take some time getting use to but once you understand it, you'll have access to your favorite songs.

Balancing the Future and the Presesnt

One of my favorite blog writers, John Wesely never ceases to intrigue me. He knows his stuff and you must check him out.

Balancing the Future and the Presesnt
Consider some of the choices that impact our lives on a daily basis:

- Do I stay up late hanging out with friends, or go to sleep and be productive tomorrow?

- Do I eat out because it’s easy, or cook at home and save money?
- Should I work late and get ahead, or enjoy the beautiful spring weather?

Each of these choices boils down to a simple question. Do I want to enjoy the present moment or plan for the future?
